I have just tested it installed in my Hapi Ufo Drum, and I'm amazed! I like to test it with my Udu Drum, which is a bit tricky to record. I play through my small amplifiers Roland's Mobile Cube and IK Multimedia's iSound and it works very well. At least in my living room – it's cold outside i Sweden this time of the year! The look of the mic is a bit like a prototype, but one doesn't see it inside the drum do you? Like the notch on the volume control. I think it would be a little tricky to change battery inside the drum and I don't want to remove it to many times 'cos I do not want it to get loose after a while. Maybe you could deliver a couple of rubber washer with is.
When I first received my Hapi UFO I was blown away by the beautiful instrument. I played it as often as possible and I still do.. I am still obsessed and in love with the tone and the vast array of sounds I can produce from this unique drum. I immediately wanted to record my Hapi UFO. I tried several different microphones.. The standards like Shure sm57s and 58s and others. Ribbon mics, condenser mics, room mics and I tried mixing the techniques, one session I used a kick drum mic under the sound hole, two sm57s to each side, two overheads pg51s and a room mic and mixed my hour long session. I was very happy with the recording and planned to do a repeat session. Then my order arrived from the guys at Hapi Drum. I ordered the DuoFlex mic mainly for live performances and street performing. I have been busy lately and I only just got the chance to try this MIC out yesterday, and just like when I first received my Hapi UFO... I was blown away. Wow. This MIC is truly amazing. There is so much clarity, the sound is pure and compliments the natural sound of th Hapi drum just perfectly. The soundman I was using to help record my performance was stunned! We tried a few positioning's and settled on the mics being a little off centre inside the drum with the volume slider about 3 quarters up. Perfect. I have had to add two small rubber washers to be placed either side of the Hapi drum when I screw the mic in place. Having been really happy and impressed with this mic I strapped it on to my djembe drum and positioned the mics about two inches above the skin and recorded a performance. As I listened back to the recording my soundman and I were speechless for a while but as we picked our jaws up from the floor we were grinning like kids. The sound is just so real. I can make out the sound of my skin on the drum skin. Not just the tone of the slap. I love the DuoFlex mic and I can't wait to experiment recording more Hapi UFO and djembe and any other instrument I can think of. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
